Joelle’s Journal
God is in everything if you look closely.
I aim to reflect this in my photography. In my worldview, God is an artist, and I am merely an observer with a lens. God paints with the elements - the ripples in water, the texture of flower petals, the motion of a wave. Earth is His canvas, and the beauty in creation points to the majesty of its Creator. This perspective is the cornerstone of my work.
Once we come to hold this perspective of Earth and life, it should inspire radical self-love. As Alexyss K. Taylor asked:
“Do you realize how magnificent you are? The God that created you is the Divine Architect that created the moon, the sun, the stars, Jupiter, Mars, Pluto, Venus…we are the walking embodiment of God’s consciousness.”
I want my work to be deeply grounding - to be a reminder that the same Creator who made the Earth so majestic and full of wonders, is the one who created you. If one of my photos prompts you to think about the power of a volcano, the grace of the ocean, or the symphony of the jungle, I want it to also be a reflection of how you were made with just as much intention. Metaphorically speaking, my photos are mirrors.
My reverence for nature only deepens as I travel. I print my photos hoping that they offer my audience portals to parts of the world I was privileged enough to experience.
But as much as I value escapism in my work, I refuse to be naive to the realities of today. For me, the craft of photography is intimately tied to being a responsible global citizen. My platform is anti-gentrification, anti-racism, and anti-neocolonial. I’m only interested in working with clients who share these values. In all my travels, I look for ways to support the local economy (instead of tourism conglomerates capitalizing off native land), connect with locals, and learn the language. I want to challenge my audience to do the same.
